How Do Mini Spy Cameras Work?
Chances are you may not be familiar with mini spy cameras or hidden cameras or nanny cams, other than what you might have seen in the movies. You may also think that these devices can be complicated to use - but the truth is that they are fairly easy to operate, and not much different than regular security cameras - except for their covert design.
The majority of the spy cameras we sell today are WiFi enabled, which allows you to live stream video to your smartphone, and watch your camera feed remotely. You can also set up motion detection alerts, and get notified if someone walks by your camera.
Mini spy cams can be AC or battery powered, depending on your particular surveillance needs.
Can a Mini Spy Camera Work without WiFi?
One question that we get asked is whether or not a mini spy camera can work without Wi-Fi. The answer is yes - many of our devices are non-WiFi mini spy cameras, meaning that you do not need WiFi in order for them to operate. These devices will simply record to a memory card that you can view later on your PC or Mac computer.
While WiFi spy cameras are very popular due to the fact they allow you to remotely view your live video feed, many people have situations where they either do not want or cannot have a WiFi enabled device. For example, perhaps you need to monitor a location that does not have WiFi access. Or perhaps there is WiFi, it is just not compatible with cameras (like some nursing homes).
Where Can I Hide a Mini Spy Camera in My House?
Where you place your mini spy camera in your home or apartment or even in an office or business setting mostly depends on the type of surveillance or video monitoring that you wish to do.
For example - for general home security against vandals or burglars, many people place their spy cameras in a large open space, like a kitchen or a living room. This captures a wide viewing angle of the main living space of the home.
If you are worried about the safety or security of an important asset however, like a computer or book collection in a den - it might make more sense to place the camera in that specific location.
Where SHOULDN'T You Hide a Spy Camera?
While there are many places you can or should hide your mini spy camera, there are also places that you should NOT hide one. While specific laws vary by state, in almost all jurisdictions in the USA it is against the law to place a camera in a place where a person has a reasonable expectation of privacy.
These areas can include bedrooms, bathrooms, changing rooms - or any other place a person would expect privacy and to not be recorded on video. While there may be some exceptions in certain circumstances, it is generally advised to stay clear of recording in one of those areas.
Are Mini Spy Cameras Legal?
You may also be wondering if mini spy cameras are legal to use, and generally the answer is yes. Obviously they are not legal to use in certain areas mentioned above where people expect privacy, but generally you are permitted to utilize a spy camera in your own home for legitimate purposes.
Prior to using a hidden spy camera or nanny cam however, we do recommend checking with all applicable local laws and ordinances if you are uncertain.
Can I Use Audio Recording?
While many spy cameras do contain audio capabilities, it is important to determine if your particular use is allowed or not. Audio recording laws differ from video recording laws, so in many situations where you are permitted to record video, you may not be able to record audio.
This is due to state by state laws regarding audio laws. Some states are considered one-party consent states, where just one person being recorded needs to be aware of the recording. Other states are more strict, and are called two-party consent states, where all parties must be aware of the recording.
